everywhere! at home, at work, in the garden, in the beach. just not in the park, I swear.

There’s one thing that all girls need to learn how to do and it’s not how to change a flat tire or how to do their taxes. It’s not even how to cook a gourmet meal worthy of a five-star rating from their friends and family, no. The most important thing that you can teach yourself is how to love yourself and keep a positive body image.

“What’s body image?” you ask.

To put it simply, body image is the way you see yourself and the way you think of yourself. It’s what you see in the mirror every time you look, regardless of your mood or any other surrounding factor. It’s how you perceive yourself no matter how others perceive you.

It may rely heavily on the physical, but building and keeping a positive body image has a lot to do with your mental well-being as well. Ideally, you should be your number one fan. You should be your own cheerleader and your own best friend. It sounds simple enough, but a lot of women don’t have a very good physical and mental image of themselves.

Keeping a positive body image is easier said than done. That doesn’t mean, however, that you should just give on it and let your insecurities eat away at you. There are many things that you can do to keep a positive body image, From taking slow and steady steps towards accepting yourself to bigger and bolder leaps that can give your self-esteem a significant boost, here are seven amazing things you can do to keep a positive body image.

  • Acknowledge and appreciate your body for all that it is – you are built a certain way for a reason. You may not see that reason yet, but someday you’ll realize it and you’ll be thankful that those flaws you used to be so insecure of are there.

  • Find your flaws and accept them or do something about them – no body is perfect and that’s okay. Everyone has flaws and being open to discovering what yours are is a big step towards keeping a positive body image. It’s up to you to decide whether you’ll simply accept your flaws or do something about them. Either way, acknowledging that you have them gives you the power to take control of your body image.

  • Do more of what makes you happy – nothing can put a smile on your face faster than doing something that you love. Unfortunately, sometimes, we get too busy with work, school, or just life in general that we forget to carve out some time to do the things we love. Make time for these things and do them more often. Smiling alone can make you look younger and more radiant which can make keeping a positive body image a whole lot easier.

  • Keep moving – exercising regularly is one of the best things you can do for yourself. Aside from helping you maintain a healthy weight, exercising also releases endorphins (aka your “happy hormones”) which can really bring about a gorgeous glow and give you that feeling of being unburdened and stress-free. It doesn’t always have to be an intense workout session at the gym. Dancing to your favorite song while you clean your room, walking instead of driving to the store, and taking the stairs instead of going on the elevator are just some of the small things you can do to make sure you’re constantly moving and releasing those endorphins.

  • Stay away from stress – being stressed can take a toll on your physical and mental well-being which, in turn, can make you feel like you’re less than. Whatever’s causing your stress, stay far away from it whenever you can!

  • End negative relationships – some people make it their life’s mission to bring other people down. If you notice anyone around you who’s trying to make you feel like you’re less of a person just because you don’t meet their standards, cut them off of your life. It may sound drastic, but you’ll notice how much better life will be without these negative people around you, whether they’re family, friends, or someone you’re romantically involved with. Sure, it will hurt at first and you’ll probably want them back but stay strong!

  • Get to know yourself and your body more – sometimes, we hate ourselves for not being a certain way. If you take the time to get to know your body, however, you’ll discover things that you actually like about yourself rather than constantly finding faults. Don’t be afraid to look a bit longer in the mirror, or to try and move in a way you haven’t before. Self-love is all about discovery and acceptance and the more you love yourself, the more positive your body image will be.
