Motherhood is a universal equalizer and nothing is shared by more moms all over the world than their love for their little ones. While everyone wishes they could do something to make the future better for kids around the world, only a few have the means to really make an impact and Jessica Alba knew she had what it takes to make a change — so she did it.
When Jessica Alba got pregnant with her first child, she had already made her mark in Hollywood. She had starred in Honey in 2003 and was part of the Sin City franchise as a determined stripper named Nancy Callahan. She had also played a few minor roles prior to the big roles which opened up bigger opportunities for her.
Instead of milking her fame to sell the usual products other celebrities love to slap their name on and hard sell to their fans, Jessica Alba decided she wanted to do something else. The birth of her first child in 2008 is really what started her passion for baby and childcare products that are gentle on the skin, good to Mother Earth, and easy on the pockets.
Much to her surprise, Jessica discovered that natural, eco-friendly childcare products was a niche market that didn’t seem like it was made for the everyday ordinary family. There were very few products to choose from and a lot of them were priced higher than what the regular mom could afford. This discovery led her to do her own research and, later on, start her own brand.
In 2012, The Honest Company was born. The brand was co-founded by Jessica Alba and three other partners. One of which was Christopher Gavigan, an American entrepreneur and author of “Healthy Child Healthy World: Creating a Cleaner, Greener, Safer Home.” The brand started with only 17 products in their lineup, all of which were sold purely online. These included diapers and bath products, among other things.
After a year of operations, The Honest Company had over $50 million in sales. A year later, they were able to raise $70 million from venture capitalist funding which, along with everything else the company has achieved, put a value of $1 billion on the company, inducting The Honest Company into the Unicorn Startup Hall of Fame. This was also the same year that The Honest Company’s products were available for purchase in retail stores across the US and Canada.
From there, The Honest Company grew, added more products to their lineup, expanded to a beauty line called Honest Beauty, and, finally, is set to file for IPO soon with talks of valuation possibly reaching the $2 billion mark.
The ride to the top definitely hasn’t been easy for Jessica and the Honest team. The brand has been involved in countless controversies, issues, and lawsuits, but that didn’t stop them from achieving amazing milestones and surpassing them with flying colors.
Aside from being a successful actress and entrepreneur, Jessica Alba is also known as one of the top Hollywood philanthropists and activists. She supports charities and causes that benefit women and children and is also known to be a strong driving force to have more women in the workplace, not just within her own company, but in all other business industries as well. She’s making sure to teach her kids about doing good deeds, too. From donating toys to the less fortunate from their very own stash every time they get new ones to exposing them to charity work and empathy-building situations where they can have first-hand helping experience.
